How has flashlights helped our society? What impact and change have they provided?

How has flashlights helped in the short term and in the long term? I have some ideas but just am having trouble getting started. (medical field, coal mining, search and rescue, police, fire, etc....) Any help and suggestions on how to start and write this paper!

1. Looks like you are having no trouble getting started - you have a lot to go on there.
2. Portable light source. Power failures, camping, used as a signalling tool also. Convenient access to portable, safe source of light when accessing a dark or unlighted area, such as attic, storage shed, outdoors etc. These days many flashlights use LEDs instead of incandescent bulbs. As a result batteries last up to 10 times as long.
